Art In Embassies: Artist Exchange

"February 19, 2016

Dear Mr. Boyd

On behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies, I am writing to confirm your participation in our Artist Exchange program.  The goal of this initiative is to foster global cross-cultural exchange. By engaging foreign citizens and highlighting the universally shared cultural bonds between America and the host country of Costa Rica, this program promotes mutual respect and understanding by sharing the story of the United States through its artists.

You have been selected to travel to San Jose, Costa Rica, to conduct cultural programming related to the Art in Embassies’ program and the art exhibition at the Residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica, Ambassador Haney. Programming is tentatively scheduled to occur the week of March 28 through March 31, 2016

For over 50 years, AIE has been promoting cultural diplomacy through the visual arts in over 200 U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide.  Our objective is to engage with thousands of host country citizens in each country every year.  In the past decade, we have expanded our programming to include two-way artist exchanges.  With this initiative, we have extended AIE’s reach beyond the walls of these missions into local communities and opened the dialogue even further.

Thank you for participating as a lender to Art in Embassies and for your enthusiastic involvement in our Artist Exchange program.  It is this sort of public diplomacy that promotes understanding between cultures, showing how art can transcend borders.

Best regards,
Welmoed Laanstra
